What is Yelp and what can it do for me?

Yelp Logo

“It’s word of mouth – amplified!”

Yelp is an online rating and review service that helps people connect with great local businesses. A number of good reviews on Yelp will encourage potential customers to contact you directly, and can also help significantly with Google search results as well.

Reach new customers who are ready to spend

Are you looking for new customers? Of course! Yelp reports that they had over 102 million unique visitors in Q1 2013. Of these, 4 out of 5 users visit the site when they are preparing to spend money, 90% of them doing so in within a week. What all those numbers are saying is that this is a captive audience, ready to spend their money at your business.

Location, Location, Location

If your business is location-based like restaurants, hotels, or retail stores, Yelp can be a key way for new customers to find you both online and in person. If I wanted to find the closest place where I could get my car washed that’s open at 8:00 PM on a Friday, Yelp will tell me the answer, and maybe even give me a coupon to use when I visit.

Is it for everybody?

Simply put, no. Yelp doesn’t make sense for every business, and in order to get the most out of it, you will need to make sure that someone on your team has time to devote to updating your profile and reading and answering reviews. At the very least, we encourage all businesses to see if they are already listed on Yelp and claim their profile if it exists.
