Is it time for a redesign? Lets take a look…

For any size business, your website can be one of your most valuable assets and great marketing tools. You need to nurture your website and analyze user data so that you can make an informed decision on how to best serve your customers. The Web is always evolving and it is important to keep your website up-to-date with the latest technologies and Web trends. For example, in the past five years smartphones and tablets have completely changed the way people are viewing and interacting on the Web.

Day by day, the number of devices, platforms, and browsers that need to work with your site grows. Responsive web design represents a fundamental shift in how we’ll build websites for the decade to come. - Jeffrey Veen [@veen]

If you’re not staying current then you’re most likely losing potential customers and alienating others. If you feel that that your website is not effective enough, then it may be time for a redesign. Here are six reasons why:

  1. Is your website mobile friendly?

By 2015, mobile Internet usage will be greater than desktop usage, as the growth of desktop Internet users is expected to plateau. (source). You don’t want to lose your mobile audience to the competition due to a broken or unreadable website. Clients should be able to access all the same items on mobile devices that they do on computers, but in an easy to navigate format that takes into consideration touch screens. These days, we can build sites on a framework that will show the site in a version optimized for each platform. The responsive design technology has improved so much that building mobile sites is much less involved than it was even 3 years ago.

  2. Provide a better experience for potential customers

A website may start to look dated after just 2-3 years, so keep it new and fresh with a redesign. Don’t lose business with a clunky, hard-to-navigate website that’s old and doesn't accurately represent your business. It is now more cost effective than ever to make your website more interactive and easy to navigate. Use your site to capture and hold your potential customers' attention. One way to give site visitors something new to look at is by updating your website with relevant content so they want to keep coming back for more. An added bonus? Search engines like websites that are updated often.
  3. Changes in your business or marketing plans

A redesign of your website is a must when adding new products, making marketing changes, or after an expansion. It is important to keep things up to date so that clients/customers know exactly what you are providing.
  4. Is your website too slow?

When it comes to the Web, speed is the key. It could just be a difference of a few seconds for your page to load compared to a competitor’s, that a potential client’s attention is stolen away. People want to be able to quickly find the information that they need, they want to quickly navigate through a website, and then they quickly want to move on with their day. By making things easier for your targeted audience, it is the hope that potential clients are being drawn in.
  5. Incorporate new tools

Websites are no longer just about flash and lots of graphics or text. These things are not necessarily helpful when it comes to search engine optimization. Instead, a well designed website will have a wide range of tools like photo books, blogs, social media and forums. There really is no limit as to what can be achieved with your website.
  6. Stay ahead of the game

There are always going to be competitors vying for potential clients. In the online business world, this means that your website needs to be at its best to stay ahead of the competition. Simply put, people often will make a decision based on how your website looks and how it fares compared to your competition. Deciding on a website redesign may give you the leverage to grab customer attention.
